Planning on Over Seeding Your Lawn?
Think Again!
Over-seeding with winter rye grass is the traditional method for those
who want green grass during the dormant winter months That process,
however, has many downsides, not the least of which is harm to your
lawn. Over-seeding is time consuming, expensive, requires continuous
maintenance, and brings no guarantee of a green lawn.
Let's say you are planning on over seeding your lawn. Here's what you
have in store for you over the fall and winter.
Go buy the seed, the fertilizer, the equipment to spread it. Those are your
initial costs. You may pay a landscaper to do it for you, but that is not any
less! Once the seed is spread, it requires regular attention. Watering,
fertilizing...more time you're putting into the process, as well as more
money.
Now the fun part, the waiting game! Cross your fingers and hope that all
the time and money you've just spent isn't wasted. Unfortunately, there's
no assurance that the rye is going to grow. Many times, it will grow in
some areas and not others, and you have a patchy lawn.
Hopefully though your winter rye will grow consistently and evenly
throughout your lawn, giving you the color you desire. Think you're done?
Not so fast! You planted this rye in hopes that it would grow, and now it's
growing. So crank up your mower, you've got to mow that grass all winter
long! More time, more money.
Now it's Spring, and your original grass is ready to come alive again.
Unfortunately, it's having to compete with the rye for the nutrients it
needs. Also, the rye that grew over the winter has shaded the original
grass underneath all winter, so it hasn't gotten as much sunlight at it
could have. It's time now to get rid of the rye, which means killing it
off...More time, more money.
WHY FIGHT THAT FIGHT? When you add up the costs of seed, fertilizer,
watering, maintenance...even if you do it yourself, you have significant
costs, both time and money. Why spend the time and money when all it
will bring you is more cost with no guarantee of results?
